Types of Coronavirus Tests We Offer

To meet a variety of patient needs, we offer three types of COVID-19 tests. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, one of our knowledgeable staff members will be glad to speak with you and help you decide. In the meantime, here’s a brief description:

Rapid Coronavirus Test

This is a nasal swab test that identifies proteins associated with the virus that causes COVID-19. It’s the fastest test designed to reveal an active infection, so it’s an option for you if you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or you’ve recently been in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus. Results are typically available in 15 to 20 minutes.

PCR Coronavirus Test

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test is also intended for people who think they’re experiencing an active COVID-19 infection. This test screens a nasal swab sample for evidence of genetic material specific to the COVID-19 virus. It requires lab analysis, so results take a little longer than the rapid test—usually five days or less.

Antibody Serology Test

This is the best test for you if you think you contracted COVID-19 and recovered. Testing requires a small blood sample. Positive results may indicate that you have some level of immunity to the disease.
