What to Expect During a Sports Physical
Also called a pre-participation physical, sports physicals are intended to verify whether a child is healthy enough to safely participate in a given sport. Typically, the exam includes a discussion of the child’s medical history and a physical exam. When you visit us for a sports physical, you can expect to be seen by a licensed provider. He or she will ask questions about your child’s medical history, including whether they have ever been hospitalized or undergone major surgery, if they are taking any medications, and whether there is a family history of illness. Then, our provider will conduct a brief physical exam that will include:
- Checking vital signs
- Measuring height and weight
- Testing strength and flexibility
- Examining the eyes, ears, lungs, heart, and abdomen
It should be noted, however, that a sports physical is not intended to replace a yearly physical exam.
