Testing for Tuberculosis: How it Works
When you visit us for a tuberculosis test, you’ll be seen by a licensed medical professional. We offer a tuberculosis skin test, which consists of injecting a reactive substance into the arm, waiting two to three days for a reaction to appear, and then evaluating the reaction (or lack thereof). This means that you’ll need to visit us on two separate occasions for your tuberculosis test: once to receive the injection and then again to have the results read.
If your tuberculosis test result is positive, you will need additional testing to determine whether TB infection or TB disease is present.
TB Infection vs TB Disease
Being exposed to TB can result in either TB infection or TB disease. The two are different.
TB Infection
TB infection occurs when a person has breathed in TB bacteria, but their immune system has been able to prevent them from developing TB disease. TB infection does not show symptoms, is not contagious, and can be easily treated with medication. However, if left untreated, it can develop into TB disease, so detection and treatment are necessary.
TB Disease
TB disease, on the other hand, is highly contagious and results in symptoms including a constant cough, loss of appetite, and chest pains. Extensive treatment is needed to treat active TB disease.
