How TB Testing Works
We offer the Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), a two-step process described below.
Step One
A substance designed to react with tuberculosis bacteria is injected into the skin of the lower arm by a licensed medical professional. This may result in redness or the appearance of a small, pale bump. Both of these are normal symptoms that do not indicate the presence of the bacteria.
Step Two
The patient will need to wait two to three days to allow a reaction to occur. Following this waiting period, they will return to the provider so that the TB test can be read. The provider will look for a hard, raised bump at the injection site and will measure the size of the bump, if present, to determine whether the test is positive or negative.
If the skin test is determined to be positive, further testing, including a chest X-Ray, will be conducted.
